3 day event

just wanted to give all of you a heads up about an activity that is being planned for June by our Service Unit.  It is a 3-day Day Camp event, though it is happening mostly in the late afternoon, early evening.  Girls may attend all 3 days or pick and choose which they want to go to.

The three days are as follows:

Friday, June, 26th:  Picnic Dinner at Murry Park and see “Beauty and the Beast” at the outdoor theatre.  Those of you that went to see “Sound of Music” with us last year know this was a lot of fun.

Saturday, June, 27th:  Family Bike Ride from Cottonwood Rec. Center to Bywater Park.  We will have an hour’s worth of activity at CHRC regarding changing bike tires and bike safety.  The older girls will help to run this.  Then we will all bike to Bywater Park and then have a cookout.

Sunday, June 28th:  Family and Troop campout at the Spruces campground.  OUr troop will be helping to plan this evening so hopefully most of you can come.

Review of May meeting

The first thing that we discussed was the direction of the troop and where we all saw it going.  I am happy to say that the girls are pretty happy with the troop and Girl Scouts and all of them seemed like they are planning to stay in the troop and in Girl Scouts.WE discussed that the girls themselves were going to need to take a bigger role in planning the meetings and activities.

We decided to still have two meetings a month next year, one at the church and one a sleepover meeting at my house.  We get a lot accomplished in these meetings and it will help us greatly meet our goals.

We talked about how we need to finish up the Leadership Journey so that we can move on to earning Cadette Interest Patches and we also discussed when we want to start the Silver Award.

The girls all voted that they are ready to start the Silver Award so we will start the preliminary discussions regarding the award at the next meetings and try to pick a focus for the troop.

The also discussed the summer and the girls do not want to stop meetings for the summer as we have a lot to do, so we decided to have one sleepover meeting a month during the summer and maybe some day activities like going to Liberty Park or somewhere local.

The girls also really want to camp this summer, but we did not sign up for troop camping and it is full.  WE tried to get into Fish Lake and it was full.  So we may do a one night local camping trip, maybe up to Spruces.

Also the Girls really want to go to Lagoon and so we discussed going there in October when it is cooler.  UEA is the first week in October so that might be a good time if everyone is going to be around.  We discussed camping there as well.  I don’t know if the weather will permit that, but we will see.

Lastly, our next meeting is in two weeks on May 22nd.  More than likely we will make this a sleepover meeting at my house.  Four girls have agreed to plan the meeting and they are Morgan (the lead planner) and Kylie, Alicia and Amanda.  We will need to have a planning meeting sometime in the next week or so to plan the meeting.

Those of you that missed the meeting, please 33-40 in your books before the next meeting and we would like everyone to complete their interact challenge before the next meeting.  Remember the challenge is located on pages 12-15 of your books and you need to do three of them to complete the challenge.  Everyone has one, the one we did together at my house at the sleepover regarding watching a movie about cliques.

Quesions, just call.

Wicked Memories

It was raining as we all met at the Olive Garden before the production for dinner.

The show was really good and funny.

At the end of the show all the girl scouts got to come down to the very front and have a Q and A with some of the actors.  It was really awesome.  The understudy for the main character, The Wicked Witch, use to be a girl scout and she stayed in until she was a senior and got her gold award by doing a project with the Ronald McDonald House.  So that was cool because her she was an actress in a main role saying she stayed in GS and got her gold award.

The actors told the girls about what their training and college education was and each one was very different.  The main guy character never went to college but started acting when he was 8.  The girl that was the girl scout got a college degree in Science but decided it was boring and that she wanted to act.  I loved that the girls could see that there are many ways to get to where these people are.  Also, the show travels 350 days a year and is a 14million dollar show to put on.  There is a huge cast of actors and each main role has one or two understudies and sometimes the understudies have to go to different cities because they do shows in different cities at the same time and the girl that was the girl scout just got back from playing San Francisco for a sick actress in that show.  The amount of people backstage to help with the production is huge as well.

Successful Cookie Sale ~ Thanks to you

Congratulations Troop 482 Girls and Parent Volunteers!! We had a very successful Cookie Sale this year! Thanks to all of the girls and parents that helped to make this such a successful year.   The girls did a great job at presales, though our presale numbers were slightly down from last year and then we really pulled it out for booth sales, selling more in booth sales this year than we did last year!!

To put this in perspective, we had four fewer girls selling this year than we had last year, which is why the slight decline in presales.  But we made up the difference in booth sales and ended up earning only slightly less this year than last year, pretty good considering that we had only 10 girls selling this year as opposed to 14 last year and considering that as the girls get older, they get less inclined to sell cookies because the “embarrassment factor” comes into play.

The cookie program is a great revenue stream for our troop but also a great source of leadership skills for the girls and I am very proud of each and every one of them for continuing to participate at such a level.

Now we just have to decide what to spend our profits on.  The girls and I have already had a discussion about this and they have lots of great ideas.  We will continue the conversation and seek additional input and I will let everyone know when we have picked an activity or trip.

Thanks again to everyone involved!!!

Julie S.

Meetings for March & April planned

I have looked at the calendar for March and April and have set the meetings for those two months.  They will not follow our usual pattern and I am sorry for that but I have to go out of town for a family obligation on of the weekends in March and then we have cookie booths, and Never the Same Weekend in April which messes things up.  So here is the schedule:

March 6th-  meeting at my house, see separate email about that

March 14-cookie booths, please sign up

march 21-cookie booths, please sign up

March 27th-  regular meeting, 3:30-5:30

April 3rd, regular meeting 3:30-5:30

we are skipping two weeks in between here but we do have two other events that some of you are going to during this time, Wicked and Everyone is Beautiful.

April 24th, Never the same weekend, girls just wanna have fun.  OUr girls are running the check-in area and so they need to be there early if possible.  Check in is at 5pm, so I would like our girls to be there no later than 4:30.  I will need help driving girls, anyone who wants to stay is welcome but it is not necessary as we will have lots of adults there this weekend.  The biggest thing I need help with is driving.  I can take a few girls but maybe not all of the luggage and here is the kicker….I have to leave by 2:30 as I need to be down there no later than 3:30.

call me if you have questions.

Encourage!!!!

Dear Parents,

Please be aware each girl in the troop is supposed to be working on things.

If you could encourage & keep them on track, it would be greatly appreciated! If you’d like, make it a family project ~ pick a date & research together!!! We want your daughter to enjoy doing these things and learn from them. If they feel like they are being forced, especially under a deadline, it will not be fun and enjoyable.  (SIDE NOTE: If you have a Butler Elem. 6th grader they also have a Greek Project due next week the 17th.)

Before the next meeting (Feb20th)

* Girls are to read /do pages 26-31 in the aMAZE book.

* Thinking Day posters are due. (Cannot be late as we are using them the next morning!!!)

* Girls are to bring to the next couple meetings a photo or picture that relates to friendship.  Tessa started it by drawing a weasel on it because she said “They Stick Together”.

Here is what the girls signed up to research for England/Thinking Day

Some girls haven’t picked a topic yet. Please do so and let me know

Amanda       Food with Kylie

Ariana          Clothing

Tessa           places of interest

Kate             plants & animals

Sara

Kylie            Food with Amanda

RSVP for Tubing

Dear girl scouts and parents,

I have not heard from many of you regarding tubing on President’s Day.  Shelley is going to go, so I know we have one mom, plus me of course.  If you are a mom or dad and are willing to go that day, please let me know as I want to talk to the girls about it this Friday in our meeting. (More details below)

Ask your daughter to show you her Amaze book.  One of the Interact Challenges is to invite someone who is not a Girl Scout to attend a meeting or an outing.  I think that if we could get enough moms/dads to go tubing, that would be a great one to invite other girls to.

DETAILS ON THE TUBING

Every year we have done the tubing/cross country skiing event, but this year we did not register.  I told the girls I would check into going on our own and this is what I have found out and decided to do:

We can go as a troop to Gorgoza Park which is on the way to Park City (off Rt. 80, across from Jeremy Ranch).  It should take us 30min. or less to get there.  It is $20 for two hours.  After talking with everyone, I would like to plan this trip for PResident’s day, February 16th.  The time is flexible as they are open from 10-8pm.  My preference is to go after lunch so we do not have to worry about food.

To-do list for Friday’s Meeting (on 2/6)

Just a reminder that we have a meeting on Friday.  We will be decorating  our own personal peacemaker kits.  I will provide the small box for each of you.  All of you need to bring things from home to decorate your box….ribbon, buttons, lace, etc. to make it your own.

Also, some of you volunteered to be team leaders….Tessa you are in charge of the opening ceremony so please get there a little early if possible.

Sara you will lead the brainstorming session about friendship qualities on page 31 and 32 of your book.  You will have each one complete the exercise on page 31 and then lead the discussion about what qualities you and they look for in a friend.

Morgan and Kylie you will start being our hosts for the ask the expert talk show.  If you would like to prepare in advance you can come up with some friendship scenarios that can be discussed (hypothethical problems that girls could have with friends or in school).  If not you can just start with the three scenarios in the leaders guide that you looked at last week.
If any of you have questions about what you are suppose to do then call Julie S
